National Poetry Day aimed to promote the books of contemporary poets, to raise the profile of poetry, and of contemporary poets and their publishers, especially small and independent publishers. Window and in-store displays about National Poetry Day were mounted by 75 bookshops, featuring 20 poetry titles. Bookshops ranged from chains to small independent shops; in some places libraries also took part.

outcomes and lessons learned

The event was not linked as closely to the BBC’s National Poetry Day as had been hoped, due to difficulties with getting timings and selections to coincide.
